STARS AND SCARS
an album in eleven scars
This is the story of a single torn flag.
The opening track, "Stars and Scars," lands like a declaration of war — holding up the image of a nation split down the seam between the cream that floats to the top and the rest who drown in the machine. From there, the album becomes a journey that traces the scars that flag has left, one at a time: the endless labor that begins with a five-a.m. alarm ("Nine to Never"), the slow death dressed as a prescription ("Pharmacy of God"), children's lives consumed by nothing but folded hands and empty words ("Thoughts and Prayers"), and the chains that run unbroken from slavery to the cell block ("Thirteenth Floor").
At its center, the record falls silent. "Ashes in the Rust Belt" — a single, bone-tired voice standing in a decaying industrial town. But here, in the ashes, a small ember is found. Tired ain't the same as beaten. That one line becomes the hinge on which the whole album turns.
The second half shifts the shape of the wound: the eyes we've sold away ("Eyes for Sale"), the earth being burned for profit ("Scorched"), and the puppet war that cuts us left from right so we never look up at the hands pulling the strings ("Puppet War"). The anger gradually narrows — away from the individual symptoms, and toward the hands that set them all in motion.
The closer, "We the People," shuts the circle. The torn flag and the castle made of sand return from the opening track — but this time their meaning is inverted. Tear it down was never the end; it was where the building begins. Out of the ashes, countless voices rise to hang their own stars again, with their own scarred and bloodied hands.
And the extended track, "Sent to Die, Left to Rot," carries the album's reach beyond the border — the voice of soldiers sent into someone else's war and abandoned the moment they came home.
This is not an album made to hate America. You can only truly raise a flag again by looking its scars dead in the eye — and this is a record of eleven scars, made for the ones who believe that.
